We Are Celebrating Planting our 5,000th Tree Worldwide By Sponsoring Local Tree For National Tree Week

5000 Trees & Counting…

Park Row Marketing has just hit the milestone of planting 5,000 trees worldwide through their existing sustainability program, where the company plants trees as they grow their clients’ business. This National Tree Week (Sat 23 Nov – Friday 1 Dec) they are celebrating their achievement by honouring an established tree growing on one of their favourite streets in their home city.

Park Row Marketing was founded in 2016 on Park Row in Bristol, and provides a range of multi-channel agency services to clients throughout the UK. Since inception they have been on a mission to have a globally positive impact on society and the environment, by making profit not only work for businesses, but for a much wider community of people and the planet.

Owen Pilcherwood, Managing Director and Founder of Park Row Marketing said;

“We’ve hit our milestone of planting over 5,000 trees as a business, and it’s given me a chance to reflect on why we started the initiative all those years ago. Living and working in the centre, you don’t see much greenery. I’ve always known that being around green spaces makes me feel better. Britain is getting more and more concrete, and I wanted Park Row Marketing to help change that in a long-term way. That’s when I got the idea for us to plant trees as we help our clients grow their businesses. It’s a win-win, I figured!”

“Gloucester Road is quite built up, and I really want to do something to help the wildlife around here. It’s especially important to me now that I have a son. He’s two years old and loves the playground at St Andrew’s Park, so we often walk down Gloucester Road to get there. He gets excited when we start the walk because he knows we’re heading to St Andrew’s Park. I thought it would be a lovely idea to sponsor a tree on his favourite street to celebrate our business milestone in a meaningful way.”

The local Trees for Streets initiative, delivered in partnership with Bristol City Council, is part of a larger national street tree sponsorship scheme from the charity, Trees for Cities. They aim to make it easy for residents and organisations to donate to the planting and watering of trees in their streets and neighbourhoods.

Lizzie Pace, Local and Council Engagement Manager for Trees For Streets said;

“It’s so encouraging to hear about business owners like Owen who are building sustainable practices into their business models. Planting 5,000 trees is a great milestone, and sponsoring trees is such a worthwhile way to ensure our cities stay healthy for humans and other wildlife.

"Street trees offer huge benefits for mental and physical wellbeing while capturing carbon, absorbing pollution and just making where we live that much nicer. It can be hard to get close to nature in a city but street trees really help us to stay connected, which studies show is overwhelmingly good for us."

National Tree Week is run by The Tree Council, bringing together the conservation sector, volunteers and tree-lovers to mark the start of the annual tree planting season. In support of tree planting initiatives, Tree Council CEO, Sara Lom said;

“We are delighted to be celebrating National Tree Week, which provides a fantastic opportunity for all of us to come together for the love of trees. Trees and hedgerows help us tackle climate change, provide homes for wildlife, improve our health and so much more. We need to help them back and by getting involved, you’ll be part of growing a greener, tree-filled future for all of us.”

The roots of the business

Talking about starting his business 10 years ago, Owen Pilcherwood said;

“I had the idea for my business back in 2014. My wife and I used to live in this dingy flat on Park Row back then. It was so loud there, with our bedroom window being right above the smoker’s area of Dojo Nightclub and ambulances to the BRI blaring past 24/7. The business needed a good name and I went with our loud, mouldy flat on Park Row where I came up with the original idea.

“Coming from a working class family, I never went to university because life was always about what money we needed right now. I found myself stuck in minimum wage call centre jobs for years, with little opportunity for progression. It was there that I noticed how sales roles can be a way for people to carve their own path.

“Sales is an amazing thing, because if you’re charming and tenacious enough, that’s all you need to make change happen for yourself. The problem is that most call centres aren’t set up to give these opportunities to their staff at all. So I decided to start a call centre that was different; at Park Row Marketing all the salespeople are shareholders, so they actively own the business they work in every day.”
